Marquee Tool and its uses in Photoshop
The Marquee tools select geometric areas of an image. After making a selection, you can edit, fill, move or apply effects only inside that selected area.
Choose a Marquee Tool
Open the Marquee Tool group to choose among the Rectangular Marquee, Elliptical Marquee, Single Row Marquee and Single Column Marquee tools.
Rectangular Marquee Tool
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool, then click and drag across the work area to make a rectangular selection. Hold Shift while dragging when you want to constrain the selection to a square.
Work with the rectangular selection
The selection appears as a dotted boundary. You can now edit only the selected area. To remove the selection, use Select > Deselect.
Elliptical Marquee Tool
Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to make oval selections. Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the selection to a circle.
Single Row Marquee Tool
The Single Row Marquee Tool creates a one-pixel-high horizontal selection across the image.
Single Column Marquee Tool
The Single Column Marquee Tool creates a one-pixel-wide vertical selection across the image.
Edit only the selected area
After drawing a marquee on an image, edits can be limited to that selection. The example starts with a solid red image and then creates a rectangular selection.
Delete inside a selection
Draw a rectangular selection over the area you want to edit, then press the Delete key to remove the selected pixels.
Fill the selected area
You can also fill or recolor only the selected portion while the marquee selection remains active.
