Creating an impression effect on an image in Photoshop
To create this impression effect, start with an image, use text to define a selection, copy the corresponding part of the image to a new layer and then apply a layer effect.
1. Import an image
Import an image into Photoshop. The original example uses a flower image.
2. Add text
Create another layer and type the text that will define the impression shape.
3. Select the text outline
Use the Magic Wand Tool to select the text so its outline becomes the active selection.
4. Remove the text layer but keep the selection
Delete the text while keeping the text-shaped selection active.
5. Select the image layer
Select the layer containing the flower image while the text selection remains highlighted.
6. Copy the selected image area
Copy the selected area from the image layer and paste it into a new layer.
7. Apply a layer effect
Open Layer Style for the new layer and apply a Drop Shadow or another suitable effect.
8. Final result
The selected part of the image now appears as the text-shaped impression.
