Freeform Pen Tool for drawing paths by hand in Photoshop
The Freeform Pen Tool lets you draw a path with a freehand motion rather than placing each anchor point individually. The original example uses the tool to trace an object and then turn that path into a selection.
Select the Freeform Pen Tool
Choose the Freeform Pen Tool from the Pen Tool group.
Draw the path freehand
Position the pointer where the path should begin, then drag around the required area. Unlike the standard Pen Tool workflow, you draw the path directly with the mouse rather than placing each point one at a time.
Trace the object
The example uses an image containing a boat. Draw around the boat to define the area that should become selected.
Make a selection from the path
After drawing the path, right-click and choose Make Selection. Set the feather value if required, then confirm to create the selection.
