Removing an image background in Photoshop
The original example removes the grass background around a dog by outlining the subject, filling the protected area and previewing the extraction.
1. Open the source image
Save or open the example image in Photoshop. The goal is to keep the dog while removing the surrounding grass.
2. Open the Extract filter
In the Photoshop version used by this tutorial, open Filter > Extract or use Alt+Ctrl+X.
3. Highlight the subject edge
Set the brush size and draw around the outline of the dog so Photoshop can identify the boundary between the subject and background.
4. Fill the subject area
After completing the outline, use the fill tool inside the selected subject. You can also adjust smoothing if needed.
5. Preview and apply
Click Preview to inspect the extraction. When applied, the unselected background is removed and the subject remains.
