Magic Wand Tool tutorial in Photoshop
The Magic Wand Tool selects pixels based on color similarity. It is useful when an area has a fairly consistent color and would be awkward to trace manually.
Select by color instead of drawing an outline
Unlike the Marquee Tool, the Magic Wand Tool does not require you to draw the selection boundary. Click a color in the image and Photoshop selects pixels within the configured tolerance range.
Example with two colored shapes
The example uses a square and a circle with different colors so the color-based selection is easy to see.
Select the orange area
Click the orange area with the Magic Wand Tool. The orange pixels become selected, allowing that area to be recolored, edited or deleted.
Select the red area
Click the red area instead when you want to edit that color region. Only the selected area is affected by the next edit.
Select a sky area in a photograph
For a photographic example, click the blue sky. Similar blue pixels are selected according to the tolerance setting. Press Delete only if removing those selected pixels is the intended edit.
