Installing MySQL for SQL Practice

You can learn MySQL with a standalone MySQL installation, MySQL Workbench, or a local development stack such as XAMPP. A web server is required only when you also want to practise PHP/database integration.

Option 1: Install MySQL Community Server

Download MySQL Community Server from the official MySQL site and follow the installer for your operating system. Record the administrator credentials you create during setup.

For a graphical client, MySQL Workbench can connect directly to the server and run SQL without a PHP/web-server stack.

Option 2: Use XAMPP or WAMP for Local PHP Practice

XAMPP bundles Apache, MariaDB, PHP and related tools for a convenient local development environment. WAMP is another Windows-focused stack. These are useful when you want to practise the SQL examples together with PHP/PDO.

phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin is a browser-based database administration tool. In a local stack it is commonly available from a localhost URL such as:

http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin/

The exact URL and authentication depend on how your local server is configured.

Check Your Setup

• Confirm the database server is running.
• Connect with Workbench, the MySQL client, or phpMyAdmin.
• Create a test database with the CREATE DATABASE tutorial.
• Check the server version with VERSION().
• If using PHP, verify your PDO connection.
