Security checklist before using the download

The downloadable membership project is useful as a learning reference, but older archives can contain historical PHP patterns. Review authentication and database code before using any downloaded version on a public server.

• Replace MD5/plain-password storage with password_hash() and password_verify().
• Use PDO or MySQLi prepared statements for member input.
• Add CSRF protection to profile, password, and account-management forms.
• Keep database credentials outside the public document root where possible.
• Use HTTPS and secure session-cookie settings on production sites.
