ASP Introduction: What Is ASP?

Classic ASP (Active Server Pages) is a server-side scripting environment from Microsoft for generating dynamic web pages on IIS. A Classic ASP page normally uses the .asp extension and can combine HTML with server-side script.

VBScript is the language most commonly associated with Classic ASP, although IIS also supported other Active Scripting engines. The important point is that the ASP code executes on the web server. The browser receives the generated HTML, not the original server-side VBScript.

An ASP page therefore needs to be requested through an IIS site with the Classic ASP feature enabled; simply opening an .asp file from disk will not execute its server-side code.
