Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools: What Website Owners Should Monitor

Search-engine webmaster tools show how your site is discovered, crawled, indexed and shown in search. They do not replace analytics, but they provide search-engine-side information that normal website analytics cannot.

Current tools

The two main platforms to know

Google Search Console

Use it to monitor Google Search performance, indexing, URL inspection, sitemaps, crawl information, structured-data reports and site issues.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Use it for Bing indexing, URL inspection, crawl/index diagnostics, sitemaps, SEO reports and related webmaster information.

Verification

Verify ownership before relying on site-specific data

Search Console supports different property types. A Domain property covers protocols and subdomains and requires DNS verification. A URL-prefix property covers only URLs matching the exact prefix and can use several verification methods.

Verification methods for URL-prefix properties can include an HTML file, HTML meta tag or other supported methods. Keep the verification method in place if the platform requires it for continued ownership verification.

For a full-site view: a Search Console Domain property is usually convenient because it includes www/non-www and HTTP/HTTPS variants under the verified domain.
Search performance

Use impressions, clicks, CTR and position together

The Search Console Performance report can show:

  • Impressions: how often your result was shown under Google's reporting rules.
  • Clicks: how often users clicked through from Google Search.
  • CTR: clicks divided by impressions.
  • Average position: an average based on the topmost result from your property under Google's reporting method.

Google recommends focusing on trends in impressions and clicks rather than treating position alone as the only success metric.

Filter by page, query, country, device and date range to understand why traffic changed. For a page-level modernization project, compare the same URL before and after the update.

URL inspection

Inspect important pages individually when something looks wrong

Use URL Inspection when a key page is not appearing as expected or when you want to check Google's information about that URL. Review index status, canonical information, crawl details and whether the live page can be fetched.

Bing Webmaster Tools also provides URL Inspection. Bing's current tool can show index status, crawl issues, SEO information, markup details and a Live URL view of what Bingbot can fetch.

Sitemaps

Submit clean canonical URL inventories

A sitemap helps search engines discover the URLs you consider important. It should normally contain canonical, indexable URLs rather than redirects, error pages, duplicates or intentionally noindexed pages.

For a deeper explanation, see Index, Noindex, Canonical or Sitemap? and the robots.txt guide.

Crawling and indexing

Use the tools to diagnose, not to guess

Common problems worth investigating include:

  • Important pages excluded from indexing.
  • Unexpected canonical selections.
  • Blocked resources or crawl restrictions.
  • Broken internal links or server errors.
  • Old redirected URLs still being discovered.
  • Sitemap URLs that do not match the site's intended canonical URLs.

Search Console also exposes Crawl Stats and robots.txt information under relevant property settings, which can help when investigating crawl behavior at a broader site level.

Search Console vs GA4

Use both because they answer different questions

Which Google queries showed my page?Search Console
How many engaged sessions came to the site?GA4
Why is an important URL not indexed?Search Console URL Inspection
What did visitors do after landing?GA4
Which pages lost impressions?Search Console

Monitoring routine

A practical monthly workflow

  1. Check for major indexing or crawl problems.
  2. Review pages with large impression or click changes.
  3. Inspect queries for important landing pages.
  4. Review low-CTR pages where ranking is already competitive.
  5. Check sitemaps and important new URLs.
  6. Investigate important pages that dropped or failed to index.
  7. Compare Search Console visibility with GA4 engagement and outcomes.
  8. Prioritize fixes using the Plus2Net Webpage Audit Framework.
Summary

Webmaster tools are diagnostic systems, not ranking scoreboards

Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are most valuable when you use them to answer specific questions: which pages are visible, which queries trigger them, whether search engines can crawl/index them, and where technical problems need attention.
