Membership & Authentication Tutorial
This tutorial sequence explains the complete member lifecycle: signup, password storage, email verification, login, protected member pages and logout. The downloadable plus-signup-v2 project is retained as a learning resource, while the tutorials below show safer patterns for current deployments.

Clear session data and the session cookie safely.

- HTTPS for signup, login and verification traffic.

- Place the project in a non-public development/staging environment first.
- Configure database connection values from environment variables or a protected server configuration file, not from committed public source.
- Set the public HTTPS base URL and the verified sender address used by your mail system.
- Create/import the required membership tables.
- Test signup, verification, login, session expiry and logout before enabling real registrations.
- Configure rate limits and logging for repeated signup/login/verification attempts.

Also use prepared statements for every user-controlled database value, regenerate the PHP session ID after authentication, and never expose database errors or secrets to visitors.
